Fortunately for some artists there is no crisis or stagnation. I am talking about the real creators, not just those who belive that graduating an art institute replaces the consistent, tenacious work, the research, the experiments and the well paced, absolutely necessary, confrontation with the public. Mihnea Baran is one of the vocational artists, the ones whose only purpose is to express themselves through their own creation, by inventing new themes and ways of dealing with the modern language of the plastic art. He had his first personal exhibition before graduating high school, followed by three others, the last one called “Astral Guests” is open during this period at the Gallery of Contemporary Art at “Iulian Antonescu “Museum Complex. Although he has a personal universe, imbued with lyricism, nostalgia and a strangeness to him, Mihnea Baran does not ignore at any moment the communication function, which is essential to the visual arts, his approach having a remarkable clarity and transparency of the message. Thus, any viewer will recognize in his work the attempt of recovering the tradition, its reintegration into a new, sensitive, thoughtful type of discourse. The artist capitalizes the inspired decorative elements of ethnographic objects, using them in other contexts and with a new significance. Moreover, in its exhibition you will also see authentic folk costumes, floor and wall carpets, belts in a set design in an integrative way. Beyond the beauty of the objects themselves, I think it is about the nostalgia of a world which slowly disappears, with its meanings and poetry. Just as the strange characters in the portraits ( “The Blockhead”, “The key-Guest” “The Countess”, “The Bride and The Groom”, ” The Princess”, “The Queen Woman”, “The Mystical Character”) it feels another nostalgic note, coming from the lost path of a fanteziste childhood, haunted by bookish phantasms. It is clear that we have before us an unique artist with his own world, with a profound, rich inner life, one which approaches the descent folk symbols world, those of Christian art, as well as the infantile fantasy with the same easiness and a kind of playful seriousness. Playful and meditative at the same time, Mihnea Baran (whose strength is a remarkable synthesis of form, as well as uncommon refinement of color arrangements) invites us to meet his “astral guests” by talking to them and their world full of mystery and charm.

Pentru unii artisti nu exista, din fericire, criza, stagnare. Ma refer la creatorii adevarati, nu la cei care cred ca simpla absolvire a unei facultati de arta tine loc de lucru consecvent, tenace, de cautari, experimente, de confruntarea absolut necesara cu publicul, la intervale de timp bine ritmate. Mihnea Baran face parte din categoria artistilor de vocatie, a celor care nu-si vad rostul in afara felului propriu de a se exprima prin creatie, prin inventarea de noi teme si modalitati de rezolvare a lor in limbajul plasticii moderne. A avut prima expozitie personala inainte de terminarea liceului, apoi au urmat alte trei, ultima, intitulata „Oaspetii astrali”, fiind deschisa in aceasta perioada la Galeria de Arta Contemporana a Complexului Muzeal „Iulian Antonescu”. Desi are un univers personal, impregnat de lirism, nostalgie si o nota de stranietate, Mihnea Baran nu ignora nicio clipa functia comunicarii, esentiala in artele vizuale, demersul sau având o remarcabila claritate, transparenta a mesajului. Astfel, orice privitor va recunoaste in lucrarile lui tentativa de recuperare a traditiei, de reintegrarea a acesteia intr-un nou tip de discurs, sensibil, reflexiv. Artistul valorifica inspirat elementele decorative ale unor obiecte etnografice, folosindu-le in alte contexte si cu o noua semnificatie. De altfel, in expozitia sa veti vedea si costume populare autentice, la fel, scoarte, paretare, brâie, intr-o scenografie cu sensuri integratoare. Dincolo de frumusetea in sine a obiectelor, cred ca este vorba si despre nostalgia dupa o lume care, incet, incet, dispare, cu rosturile si poezia ei. Asa cum, in personajele ciudate din portrete („Naucul”, Oaspete cheie”, Contesa”, „Mirii”, „Printesa”, „Femeia regina”, „Personaj mistic”) se simte o alta nota nostalgica, venind dinspre cararea pierduta a unei copilarii fanteziste, locuita de fantasme livresti. E limpede ca avem in fata un artist singular, cu o lume numai a lui, cu o viata interioara profunda, bogata. Care abordeaza teritoriul simbolurilor de obârsie folclorica, pe cele ale artei crestine, dar si zona fantasticului infantil cu aceeasi dezinvoltura, cu un soi de gravitate jucausa. Ludic si meditativ, totodata, Mihnea Baran (a carui forta de sintetizarea a formei e apreciabila, ca si rafinamentul unor acorduri cromatice putin comune) ne invita sa-i cunoastem „oaspetii astrali”, intrând in dialog cu ei si cu lumea lor plina de mister si de farmec.
