“Notes to Jimbolia visual” / “Însemnări vizuale la Jimbolia”
UAP Branch Timisoara and Jimbolia Municipality will organize the first edition of Jimbolia Creative Youth Camp on 5-14 August where 16 painters, graphic artists and ceramists from Timisoara, Arad, Bucharest and Jimbolia were invited and have confirmed their participation. “For 10 days [...] we can see how the edge and center are just excuses for visual grammar and style – increasingly threatened by copying and consumerism”, tells us about the initiative Dan Mircea Cipariu, writer and journalist, the special guest of the camp. Participating artists are as follow: Alina Slimovschi, Anca Ciofârlă, Delia Calinescu, Mihai Zgondoiu, Cristian Pavelescu, Florin Tomescu, Marian Dobre, Mihnea Baran, Gheorghita Balan, Costin Brăteanu, Dora Brăteanu, Teophil Soltész, Anca Iulia Ciucur, Alina Nicoara, Sorin Nicodim.. The curator of the camp is Alina Slimovschi, painter, of Timisoara Branch UAP and from the City of Jimbolia Mrs. Nicoleta Suciu, director of the House of Culture, who deals with organization and proper conduct of business. At the end of the camp there will be inaugurated a group exhibition with works made by the participating young artists. “Today, when the edge and center of arts and culture have become interchangeable, it is refreshing to note that a border city – like Jimbolia – becomes a center for energy and acts of books and art. Filiala din Timişoara a UAP organizeză în colaborare cu Primăria oraşului Jimbolia, în perioda 5-14 august, prima ediţie a Taberei de creaţie vizuală pentru tineret din Jimbolia la care au fost invitaţi şi şi-au confirmat participarea 16 de pictori, graficieni şi ceramişti din Timişoara, Arad, Bucureşti şi Jimbolia. “Timp de 10 zile [...] vom putea vedea cum marginea şi centrul devin doar pretexte pentru gramatici vizuale şi stilistice din ce în ce mai ameninţate de multiplicare şi consumism”, ne spune despre iniţiativă scriitorul şi jurnalistul Dan Mircea Cipariu, invitat special al taberei. Artiştii participanţi sunr Alina Slimovschi, Anca Ciofârlă, Delia Călinescu, Mihai Zgondoiu, Cristian Pavelescu, Florin Tomescu, Marian Dobre, Mihnea Baran, Gheorghiţă Bălan, Costin Brăteanuu, Dora Brăteanu, Teophil Soltész, Anca Iulia Ciucur, Alina Nicoară, Sorin Nicodim. Curatorul taberei din partea Filialei din Timişoara a UAP este pictoriţa Alina Slimovschi, iar din partea Primăriei oraşului Jimbolia se ocupă de organizare şi buna desfăşurare lucrărilor d-na Nicoleta Suciu, directoarea Casei de Cultură. Fortunately for some artists there is no crisis or stagnation. I am talking about the real creators, not just those who belive that graduating an art institute replaces the consistent, tenacious work, the research, the experiments and the well paced, absolutely necessary, confrontation with the public. Mihnea Baran is one of the vocational artists, the ones whose only purpose is to express themselves through their own creation, by inventing new themes and ways of dealing with the modern language of the plastic art. He had his first personal exhibition before graduating high school, followed by three others, the last one called “Astral Guests” is open during this period at the Gallery of Contemporary Art at “Iulian Antonescu “Museum Complex. Although he has a personal universe, imbued with lyricism, nostalgia and a strangeness to him, Mihnea Baran does not ignore at any moment the communication function, which is essential to the visual arts, his approach having a remarkable clarity and transparency of the message. Thus, any viewer will recognize in his work the attempt of recovering the tradition, its reintegration into a new, sensitive, thoughtful type of discourse. The artist capitalizes the inspired decorative elements of ethnographic objects, using them in other contexts and with a new significance. Moreover, in its exhibition you will also see authentic folk costumes, floor and wall carpets, belts in a set design in an integrative way. Beyond the beauty of the objects themselves, I think it is about the nostalgia of a world which slowly disappears, with its meanings and poetry. Just as the strange characters in the portraits ( “The Blockhead”, “The key-Guest” “The Countess”, “The Bride and The Groom”, ” The Princess”, “The Queen Woman”, “The Mystical Character”) it feels another nostalgic note, coming from the lost path of a fanteziste childhood, haunted by bookish phantasms. It is clear that we have before us an unique artist with his own world, with a profound, rich inner life, one which approaches the descent folk symbols world, those of Christian art, as well as the infantile fantasy with the same easiness and a kind of playful seriousness. Playful and meditative at the same time, Mihnea Baran (whose strength is a remarkable synthesis of form, as well as uncommon refinement of color arrangements) invites us to meet his “astral guests” by talking to them and their world full of mystery and charm.

Pentru unii artisti nu exista, din fericire, criza, stagnare. Ma refer la creatorii adevarati, nu la cei care cred ca simpla absolvire a unei facultati de arta tine loc de lucru consecvent, tenace, de cautari, experimente, de confruntarea absolut necesara cu publicul, la intervale de timp bine ritmate. Mihnea Baran face parte din categoria artistilor de vocatie, a celor care nu-si vad rostul in afara felului propriu de a se exprima prin creatie, prin inventarea de noi teme si modalitati de rezolvare a lor in limbajul plasticii moderne. A avut prima expozitie personala inainte de terminarea liceului, apoi au urmat alte trei, ultima, intitulata „Oaspetii astrali”, fiind deschisa in aceasta perioada la Galeria de Arta Contemporana a Complexului Muzeal „Iulian Antonescu”. Desi are un univers personal, impregnat de lirism, nostalgie si o nota de stranietate, Mihnea Baran nu ignora nicio clipa functia comunicarii, esentiala in artele vizuale, demersul sau având o remarcabila claritate, transparenta a mesajului. Astfel, orice privitor va recunoaste in lucrarile lui tentativa de recuperare a traditiei, de reintegrarea a acesteia intr-un nou tip de discurs, sensibil, reflexiv. Artistul valorifica inspirat elementele decorative ale unor obiecte etnografice, folosindu-le in alte contexte si cu o noua semnificatie. De altfel, in expozitia sa veti vedea si costume populare autentice, la fel, scoarte, paretare, brâie, intr-o scenografie cu sensuri integratoare. Dincolo de frumusetea in sine a obiectelor, cred ca este vorba si despre nostalgia dupa o lume care, incet, incet, dispare, cu rosturile si poezia ei. Asa cum, in personajele ciudate din portrete („Naucul”, Oaspete cheie”, Contesa”, „Mirii”, „Printesa”, „Femeia regina”, „Personaj mistic”) se simte o alta nota nostalgica, venind dinspre cararea pierduta a unei copilarii fanteziste, locuita de fantasme livresti. E limpede ca avem in fata un artist singular, cu o lume numai a lui, cu o viata interioara profunda, bogata. Care abordeaza teritoriul simbolurilor de obârsie folclorica, pe cele ale artei crestine, dar si zona fantasticului infantil cu aceeasi dezinvoltura, cu un soi de gravitate jucausa. Ludic si meditativ, totodata, Mihnea Baran (a carui forta de sintetizarea a formei e apreciabila, ca si rafinamentul unor acorduri cromatice putin comune) ne invita sa-i cunoastem „oaspetii astrali”, intrând in dialog cu ei si cu lumea lor plina de mister si de farmec.

The people of Bacau have the opportunity this summer to befriend some as strange of creatures as surprising and charming ones – the creatures present themselves as “astral guests” and came to life from the plastic artist’s brush, Mihnea Baran, to gather in his third personal exhibition
Mihnea Baran introduced his “astral guests” the the people from Bacau, “guests” lodging on the stands of the modern art galleries at “Iulian Antonescu“ Museum of History, Wednesday, June 24, right on Sinziene. The guests were warmly welcomed by those who honored the invitation to meet there and fellow artists Vasile Craita Mandra and Iulian Bucur were the ones who tried to create immediately a link of friendship between the parties. “Mihnea Baran gives us through his works, the miracle of people who were around and now they’re probably warching over us. “I like to think that after he finished the works he showed them to the sun to decide together what should be left of them” said Iulian Bucur, art critic. “Unusual, it is the most appropriate adjective that we can give to Mihnea’s work. Color and form mixes with sobriety and refined decorativism, giving the viewer the satisfaction of discovering a mysterious world, tensed by heavy arrangements, but with the brightness of the glazes that ennobles ceramic jewelry“, says, in turn, critic Vasile Craita Mandra. In fact, the “astral guests” creator himself -all 29 of them – told us they were born of read or heard in childhood folklore stories,. Moreover, ethnographic detail is not missing in any of the “portraits” by Mihnea Baran, in his characters: “The Blockhead”, “The Lady”, “The Countess”, “The Old Lady”, “The Shepherd”,”The Bride and The Groom”, “The Prince”, ” The Princess”, “Baba Dochia”, “Madonna with Child” and the others. And for everything to make sense, the “guest’s” “accommodation” was sprinkled with objects from the Ethnography Department of the Museum, giving people of Bacau leisure to look in the galleries until the end of July, having the chance to enjoy a veritable exhibition of compared art.

“Oaspeti astrali”, cazati la Muzeul de Istorie
Bacauanii au ocazia, in aceasta vara, sa lege prietenii cu niste creaturi pe cit de ciudate, pe atit de surprinzatoare si fermecatoare – fapturile isi spun “Oaspetii astrali” si s-au nascut din penelul artistului plastic Mihnea Baran, pentru a se uni in cea de a treia expozitie personala a acestuia
Mihnea Baran a facut cunostinta publicului bacauan cu “Oaspetii sai astrali”, “cazati” pe simezele Galeriilor de arta contemporana din cadrul Muzeului de Istorie “Iulian Antonescu” din Bacau, miercuri 24 iunie, chiar de Sinziene. Oaspetii au fost intimpinati cu multa caldura de cei care au dat curs invitatiei la intilnire, iar colegii artistului, Vasile Craita Mindra si Iulian Bucur, au fost cei care s-au ocupat de crearea, imediat, a unei legaturi de prietenie intre parti. “Mihnea Baran ne ofera, prin lucrarile sale, miracolul oamenilor care au fost si care acum, ne privesc probabil, de undeva de sus. Imi place sa cred ca dupa ce le-a facut, le-a aratat soarelui pentru a hotari, impreuna, ce sa ramina din ele”, a apreciat Iulian Bucur, critic de arta. “Insolit, acesta este cel mai adecvat adjectiv ce-l putem da lucrarilor lui Mihnea. Culoarea si forma coalizeaza cu sobrietate si rafinat decorativism, oferind privitorului satisfactia de a descoperi o lume enigmatica, tensionata de acorduri grele, dar cu stralucirea smalturilor ce innobileaza bijuteriile ceramice”, este de parere, la rindul sau, criticul Vasile Craita Mindra. In fapt, ne-a spus insusi creatorul “Oaspetilor astrali”, acestia, 29 la numar, s-au nascut din povestile din folclor, citite sau auzite in copilarie. De altfel, detaliul etnografic nu lipseste in nici unul din “portretele” realizate de Mihnea Baran, personajelor sale: Naucul, Doamna, Contesa, Batrina, Ciobanasul, Mirii, Printul, Printesa, Baba Dochia, Madona cu pruncul si celelalte. Iar pentru ca totul sa capete mai mult sens, sala de “cazare” a “Oaspetilor” a fost presarata si cu obiecte din Sectia de Etnografie a Muzeului, bacauanii cu ragaz de a trece pe la Galerii pina la finele lui cuptor, avind, astfel, ocazia de a se bucura de o veritabila expozitie de arta comparata.
